Perfect World Entertainment and developer Echtra Games have announced that Torchlight: Frontiers has a new name - Torchlight 3, and that will launch this summer on Steam.
In a video posted on YouTube, Max Schaefer, the creator and executive producer of the Torchlight franchise, explains why they’ve decided to change the name of the game, and also the business model.
One reason is the feedback they got from the alpha testers, and the other is that, as they were making it, the game, in a way, told them that it should be the spiritual successor to Torchlight 1 and 2.
When it comes to the business model, Torchlight 3 was supposed to be free to play, but they've decided to return to the premium model which means that for one box-price you get the whole game and all of the content from day 1. In addition, it’s revealed that they’re switching from Arc to Steam for PC distribution.
So, when Torchlight III releases on Steam, players will be able to buy the full game and play however they like, online or offline, with access to all playable content.
The release date for Torchlight 3 is yet to be announced. A closed alpha testing is scheduled to begin on January 29.
Finally, you can find more details about other changes made to the game in a post on the official website.
