A free update, version 2.0, for Super Mario Maker 2 is going to add Link from the Legend of Zelda as a playable character. Also, there are going to be new course parts and a new gameplay mode. The update arrives on December 5.
With this update, players will be able to use the new Master Sword item exclusively in the 8-bit Super Mario Bros. style. When they pick up the Master Sword item, Mario turns into Link and gets a whole new set of moves such as attacking with a sword, shooting arrows or dropping bombs.
In addition, the update is going to bring with it more course parts and enemies such as Spike and Pokey, as well as a new mode called Ninji Speedruns. Then, players will be able to use Dash Block which gives Mario a major speed boost when stepped on.
There will also be Frozen Coins which are in blocks of ice and can only be released if melted by fireballs or other fire elements. Also, another novelty is P Block. Invisible P Blocks temporarily turn into hard platforms, or vice-versa when a P Switch is hit.
Moreover, in the new Ninji Speedruns mode, players can take on a timed challenge in courses created by Nintendo just for this mode. Other players’ Ninji Ghosts will run alongside players as they compete against rivals from around the world.
The Ninji Ghosts that appear are selected from player data at a similar performance level, so players can gradually improve their performance by running the course alongside other players’ Ninji Ghosts. Players can also collect stamps by clearing courses and redeem them in-game to get special Mii costumes.
Each Ninji Speedrun event will run for about one week, with new courses distributed periodically.
