Yacht Club Games stepped into the indie scene way back in 2011 with Shovel Knight. It’s a 2D side-scrolling platformer with an NES-style aesthetic. Shovel Knight has seen great success and even received numerous expansions, but it’s time to move on to a new thing. Namely, the developer has revealed a new game called Cyber Shadow.
Like Shovel Knight, Cyber Shadow sticks with the 2D side-scrolling platformer formula but it combines "the level design principles of Mario, the skills and action of Ninja Gaiden, the enemy designs of Contra, and the dark visual aesthetic of Batman." The trailer shows us some fast-paced gameplay and it looks like you’ll have to be precise and on your toes for this one. You'll be able to equip items, find secrets, upgrade your skills, and all of that good stuff, all while listening to a very cyberpunky (yes, that’s a word) soundtrack produced by Jake Kaufman who actually worked on Shovel Knight as well.
Yacht Club Games isn’t the actual developer of this title. Instead, they’re working with their one-man team, Aarne "MekaSkull" Hunziker, to help make this game work. The company has stated on their official website that they will focus specifically on "the marketing, porting, business side, and typical roles of a publisher."
Yacht Club Games will be at PAX East (which runs from March 28th to March 31st) where the studio will be showing off a demo build of Cyber Shadow as well as both Shovel Knight: King of Cards and Shovel Knight: Showdown. The game will be released on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, XBOX ONE and PC but the exact date hasn’t been announced yet.
