Sales Slowing Down Ahead of Next-Gen, but PS4 Had a Good Christmas

As we get closer to the next-gen consoles, current-gen sales are going down, but PlayStation had good sales numbers this Christmas.

During the Christmas period, 6.1m PlayStation 4 consoles were sold. It’s a noticeable decline from last year when it was 8.1m though. As of the end of 2019, 108.9m PlayStation 4 consoles were sold.

The decline in sales is nothing unexpected, it’s a trend we can see going back multiple generations of hardware. As we get closer to the launch of a brand new console, people hold back on buying the current one and wait for the next-gen.

PlayStation had an amazing generation with the 108.9m units sold, which is double the number of Switch units sold, and double the suspected Xbox One sales.

It’s up to Sony now to keep the strong foothold they have in the industry with the new PlayStation 5. The PlayStation 5 is coming near the end of 2020 and there are still a lot of things yet to be revealed.
