All the fans of retro gaming, if you’re bored with all those older games that came out in the ’80s and ’90s, here are some of the newer video games that have that retro vibe we all enjoy so much. Have in mind this is not a top list, I just put these games in chronological order of their release dates.
Maybe these games can bring back some childhood memories, one of my least favorite ones being dead legs because I used to sit on them for too long. Other than that, they’re all good.
Super Meat Boy
Super Meat Boy is a platform game developed and published by Team Meat. It was released in 2010, and if you think, for some reason, that meatballs (meatcubes?) can’t be cute, well look at this one. He even has a black eye, poor thing.
Lead this little guy through over 300 levels filled with traps, saw blades and crumbling blocks, and help him save his girlfriend from the evil scientist Dr. Fetus.
This top-down shooter follows “Jacket” who wakes up in his apartment and gets cryptic messages on his answering machine. For every stage of the game, he gets a different cryptic message and they all tell him what he should do. Kill every person at a certain location.
Hotline Miami was developed by Dennaton Games and published by Devolver Digital in 2012. It also has a sequel, called Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, so you get double the fun of this pixelated gem.
Axiom Verge is a side-scroller action-adventure Metroidvania video game developed by Thomas Happ Games, released in 2015.
You control Trace, a scientist that works in a laboratory where a pressure valve causes an explosion and he gets knocked out. When he wakes up, he finds himself not being on Earth anymore, but in a high-tech alien world Sudra. Now he’s on a mission to stop a mad scientist who destroyed the Sudrans long ago.
Created by American indie developer Toby Fox, Undertale is a role-playing game with a top-down perspective released in 2015.
You play as a child who needs to explore an underground world filled with towns and caves. Complete objectives and numerous puzzles to progress through the story and fight the monsters on the way. All your choices will affect the plot so be wary of your decision-making.
This game. This game is a side-scrolling run-and-gun platform pixelated video game developed by Free Lives and published by Devolver Digital in 2015. If you enjoyed Contra, you are sure to like this one as well.
You play as a bro, you get a random bro and all the bros are a parody of action movie heroes. Fight the terrorists, save the prisoners from captivity, defeat the devil boss, hoist the American flag, get to the chopper and leave the scene while everything explodes.
