There are a lot of zombie games out there and some might say that there are too many. But if every zombie game was as good as this one then I say the more the merrier. Into the Dead 2 is a first-person, endless runner, run and gun type of game. However, it offers a pretty nice story on top of the guts and glory (apparently I’m in the mood for rhyming today). So without further ado let’s jump right into the nitty-gritty.
So as I said this game has a story mode. You play as James, a regular joe that is trying to get to his family during a zombie outbreak. On the way, his truck flips over and he’s left to face the hordes of the undead on foot. You’ll be going through 7 chapters with 60 stages. The first-person perspective along with beautiful environments give a surprisingly immersive experience. The people at PikPok (the developer) implemented some pretty good sound design too. If you’re using headphones (which I recommend) you’ll hear zombie growls from each side as you run past them. The story mode also has three different endings and you don’t see that too often in mobile games.
The gameplay is simple but very well executed. There isn’t a lot of on-screen buttons (there’s one for switching weapons and one for throwing grenades) which is great. You can move left and right by moving your thumb on the left side of the screen, and you shoot by tapping on the right side. You start off with just a pistol but as you progress you’ll unlock bigger and badder guns. You’ll have a limited amount of bullets but have no fear. There are ammo boxes out in the field you just have to run over them to pick them up.
Regardless, try to use your bullets strategically. And keep an eye on how much is left in your magazine since there is no manual reload. I got munched on while reloading a couple of times, so time those reloads carefully. I should mention that there are microtransactions for some guns and boosts, but not getting them won’t slow down your progression of the story.
What will slow down your progression, however, is the stamina. The game has one of those energy mechanics where you spend energy (here it’s stamina) to play levels. Thankfully there are two more game modes to keep you busy while you wait for your stamina to recharge. You have events and daily challenges which yield some exclusive rewards. You can climb the leaderboard through events and earn silver (the games’ currency) after completing stages. Or partake in daily challenges where you are given a random weapon and go on a merciless slaughter fest. It’s like an endless mode to test your skills and see how far you can run.
So if you’re looking for a beautiful, gory, yet simple shooter this is definitely the game for you. It’s out on both Android and iOS and it’s free. Into the Dead 2 gets a solid 8.3/10 from me.
