The decision to make the new Half-Life game a VR title is doing wonders for Valve and Index sales. The sales have more than doubled after the announcement.
Based on stats from SuperData, before Half-Life: Alyx was announced 46k Index headsets were sold, but after November that jumped to 149k units sold. The announcement of Half-Life: Alyx resulted in 103k sales in October and November, which is obviously a rather impressive boost in sales.
The Index isn’t a cheap headset, but that obviously wasn’t an issue since the Index was completely sold out by mid January.
Even though it got a nice boost in sales, PS VR and Oculus Quest are still ahead in sales numbers. It’s also worth noting that a lot of people were really interested in just the controllers, which were sold out incredibly quickly.
Something that also impacted the sales positively is the fact that by buying the headset, you will also receive Half-Life: Alyx for free. Considering the price of the headset, it would be insane to not give the game for free, but either way it is a nice little incentive to buy the Index.
The Index is still out of stock, but there’s no doubt that sales will be high when it comes back.
