The third major installment in the series was finally revealed at the GearBox PAX East panel. We finally got to see the debut Borderlands 3 trailer but we didn’t get a release date yet. However, we’ll have more information on April 3rd.
The trailer kicks off with a nice little shot of the iconic Psycho mask and pans up to reveal the wasteland that we all know and love, and it’s still as desolate and full of chaos as when we last saw it. After that, we are greeted with a Children of the Vault and next to the entrance there are signs referring to Calypso. One reads, "Answer Calypso's call," and another invites people to "Meet Calypso." This character is introduced in the very next scene and from the looks of things it's pretty safe to assume that she'll be one of the big baddies of Borderlands 3. Those of you who aren’t familiar with Greek mythology may not know that Calypso is the daughter of a titan called Atlas. And as we all know, Atlas is also the name of one of the big corporate entities on Pandora.
In the next shot we see Lilith, who is, of course, the Siren from the first game. She's a pretty big deal in the world of Borderlands and while she probably won’t be a playable character, she will for sure play a significant role in the events of Borderlands 3.
After that, we're introduced to four new characters who seem to be the new Vault Hunters players will get to play as. As we all know, Borderlands games usually have a mixture of traditional archetypes but they throw in some unexpected twists. For now, it’s unclear what the classes will be this time around, but we did see that buff female Vault Hunter that summons multiple spectral arms. Maybe she’ll be a Berserker/Siren hybrid.
The trailer then rolls on to quick action packed cuts with the four Vault Hunters cruising around in vehicles, firing all sorts of strange weapons, and causing all sorts of mayhem. At one point Maya (the Siren from the second game) makes an appearance as well, but she has much longer hair now.
Now, an exciting new thing about Borderlands 3 was revealed when a text showed up on the screen saying "Explore the Worlds!" This probably means that the game is going to be way bigger than the previous titles offering players the possibility of traveling to different worlds to scavenge for some sweet loot. The trailer even shows us some of these locations like the neon city that has enormous skyscrapers, the spooky overgrown swamplands, and of course, the traditional wastelands that we’re all familiar with.
There's a brief intermission in the trailer for Brick to lay down a sweet sax solo before we get to see one of the staples of the Borderland franchise. Of course, I’m talking about guns. The trailer claims that Borderlands 3 will have a over one billion guns one of which is an assault rifle with tiny robot legs that just walks around shooting off shots. Honestly, that may be the cutest gun I’ve ever seen (apart from the tiny pistol in Battlefield 1). Bottom line, the video shows off pretty much exactly what you’d expect from a Borderlands trailer.
As I mentioned in the beginning, Gearbox will reveal more information about the game on April 3rd. We aren’t sure exactly what we’ll see but rest assured that we’ll bring you the updates as soon as we find out more. You can also head over to the Borderlands website since GearBox said that the updates will be shown there.
The Year of Borderlands will also give fans the chance to play a Game of the Year version of the first game which includes new weapons and other improvements. Not only that but the Borderlands Handsome Collection is getting graphical improvements via a free Ultra HD Texture Pack. This will also be available for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2 on PC. And last but not least, all of Borderlands 2's DLC will be added to sBorderlands 2 for PlayStation VR this summer.
Gearbox's panel also showcased a trailer for Risk of Rain 2, which you can pick up right now on Steam Early Access, as well as a trailer for Justin Roiland's new game, Trover Saves The Universe, as well as the announcement of Bulletstorm for the Nintendo Switch.
