BioWare confirmed they are working on a massive rework for Anthem. The expectation for the overhaul is a substantial reinvention of the core gameplay loop of Anthem.
The overhaul has been rumored for a while now, but almost a year since the underwhelming launch it has been confirmed. "Over the last year, the team has worked hard to improve stability, performance and general quality of life while delivering three seasons of new content and features," Casey Hudson, BioWare general manager wrote in a blog post, "We have also heard your feedback that Anthem needs a more satisfying loot experience, better long-term progression and a more fulfilling end game."
The main goals and focus points of the overhaul are redesigning "the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with meaningful rewards". Thankfully, the one thing everyone agrees is fun in Anthem, flying through the world, is staying the same.
The blog post also confirms something we were already aware of, Anthem was rushed and it wasn’t tested enough. “We’ll be doing something we’d like to have done more of the first time around,” the post continues, “Giving a focused team the time to test and iterate, focusing on gameplay first".
Until the overhaul is completed, Anthem will run on the current version and BioWare will be moving away from full seasons. What has been promised so far, will be added during the overhaul.
No expected launch date for Anthem 2.0 was given, but a one-year anniversary event will be announced soon.
