Area28, a Hong Kong-based software company established in 2017, is working on building “the world’s first cloud-based collaboration platform and game engine to empower game development teams to connect and create in real-time,” as the company puts it.
Now, it has announced the close of a $2.15 million seed funding round.
The round was led by Vectr Ventures and Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, with participation from APES Ventures, Bright Success Capital and Ironfire Ventures. The new funds will scale key teams in Hong Kong and China, as well as support the final stages of product development before commercial launch.
“We are enabling teams to work together closer and faster by removing decades of legacy workflow inefficiencies from the development pipeline,'' said Tony Zander, CEO of Area28.
“We allow teams to deliver their products with increased access to a distributed global workforce through a continuous integration development platform. We believe that making games should be as frictionless and as fun as playing games.”
In addition to building a high-performance game engine, Area28 is developing an engine agnostic cloud collaboration layer that will allow developers to maintain current workflows while accessing the Area28 cloud.
Cindy Chow, Executive Director of Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, said, “With China being one of the world’s biggest markets for games, we are looking forward to helping Area28 service this market through collaboration leveraging the Alibaba ecosystem. We believe Area28’s technology will add significant value to the game development process and we are excited to help them grow and scale faster.”
